On the drive or on the road?

In Scotland, a skip entirely on private land does not need a road skip permit. Road placement needs the relevant authority’s permission before delivery.

  • Private spaceConfirm the landowner’s permission, a suitable surface and clear vehicle access.
  • Public roadAgree the application responsibility and wait for permission before the skip arrives.
  • Dates and parkingCheck the hire and collection dates against the permit period. Ask about any separate parking suspension.

Your council sets the conditions.

There is no single Scottish fee or notice period. Check who applies, how long permission lasts and whether parking or traffic arrangements need separate approval.

Find the council for your skip.

These are the authorities for our initial Scottish area guides.

Aberdeen

Use the council’s roadworks permits guidance to confirm the skip permission for the proposed road space. Explain any effect on parking or traffic before a delivery date is agreed.

Aberdeen City Council guidance ↗

Aberdeenshire

Aberdeenshire publishes roads application forms. Peterhead uses this council, rather than Aberdeen City; confirm the appropriate skip application for the delivery address.

Aberdeenshire Council guidance ↗

Angus

Angus provides a Section 85 skip permit. Its conditions require the skip to leave within the permission period, or an extension to be arranged when needed.

Angus Council guidance ↗

Dumfries and Galloway

Use Dumfries and Galloway’s road occupation guidance to establish the permission needed for the skip position. Declare any other equipment that also needs to occupy road space.

Dumfries and Galloway Council guidance ↗

Dundee

Dundee publishes a Section 85 skip application with conditions. Check the current application requirements, requested dates and exact siting before arranging delivery.

Dundee City Council guidance ↗

East Ayrshire

Ayrshire Roads Alliance handles skip permits for East Ayrshire. It says the skip hire company is responsible for obtaining and paying for the permit; trunk roads have a separate route.

Ayrshire Roads Alliance guidance ↗

East Dunbartonshire

East Dunbartonshire asks for a plan or sketch and applications at least seven days before occupation. Its conditions include inspection of the position and a separate extension process.

East Dunbartonshire Council guidance ↗

East Lothian

East Lothian publishes road permit guidance and builder’s skip conditions. Check the proposed dimensions and supporting information before submitting the skip application.

East Lothian Council guidance ↗

East Renfrewshire

East Renfrewshire has its own skip licence service, separate from Renfrewshire Council. Check the current application, permitted duration and applicant requirements for the exact address.

East Renfrewshire Council guidance ↗

Edinburgh

For a skip on a public street, check the skip permit and any separate parking suspension. A residents’ parking permit does not reserve a bay for a skip.

City of Edinburgh Council guidance ↗

Falkirk

Falkirk asks for a location plan and applications at least seven days before the required siting date. Its permit service also handles requests for extensions.

Falkirk Council guidance ↗

Fife

Fife’s online skip permit application asks for the skip hire company’s details and takes payment online. Agree who will submit it before the skip is delivered to a public road.

Fife Council guidance ↗

Glasgow

Glasgow has a dedicated application for skips up to 8 cubic yards. Confirm the actual skip dimensions and proposed position before choosing the application route.

Glasgow City Council guidance ↗

Highland

Highland requires at least seven days’ notice. Its skip permission does not include a road closure or permission to place building materials beside the skip.

Highland Council guidance ↗

Inverclyde

Inverclyde’s roads team provides the relevant road permissions and skip conditions. Confirm the precise location and permission period before occupying a road, footway or verge.

Inverclyde Council guidance ↗

Midlothian

Midlothian says the person hiring the skip must obtain the permit and allows a minimum of five working days to process applications. Confirm the responsibility before booking.

Midlothian Council guidance ↗

Moray

Moray lists a separate road occupation route for skips. Its guidance also distinguishes temporary traffic restrictions and pedestrianised-area parking, which may need separate consideration.

Moray Council guidance ↗

North Ayrshire

North Ayrshire publishes its own skip permit conditions. Use these for the proposed location rather than applying East or South Ayrshire’s arrangements to the job.

North Ayrshire Council guidance ↗

North Lanarkshire

North Lanarkshire publishes a 28-day notice period for Section 85 skip applications. Road-based jobs therefore need early planning; a requested date is not guaranteed approval.

North Lanarkshire Council guidance ↗

Perth and Kinross

Perth & Kinross publishes a Section 85 application for skips. If the project also needs scaffolding, discuss both activities when checking the appropriate permission.

Perth & Kinross Council guidance ↗

Renfrewshire

Renfrewshire provides a dedicated route to request a skip permit or an extension. Keep the permitted dates aligned with your hire and collection arrangements.

Renfrewshire Council guidance ↗

South Ayrshire

South Ayrshire’s skip permit service is provided by Ayrshire Roads Alliance. The hire company must obtain the permission, with separate arrangements for relevant trunk roads.

Ayrshire Roads Alliance guidance ↗

South Lanarkshire

South Lanarkshire lists 14 days’ notice for a Section 85 skip permit. Its road-status map can help establish whether the proposed space is part of the public road.

South Lanarkshire Council guidance ↗

Stirling

Stirling offers an online skip permit application. Read its guidance before applying and check the authorised period against the delivery and collection dates.

Stirling Council guidance ↗

West Dunbartonshire

West Dunbartonshire lists roads and pavement applications and permits. Establish the correct permission for the proposed skip location before arranging road placement.

West Dunbartonshire Council guidance ↗

West Lothian

West Lothian has a specific Section 85 skip permit route. Check the skip conditions rather than assuming a general road occupation permission covers the skip.

Your skip hire questions, answered.

How much will my skip cost?

Call 0330 912 9966 with your postcode, waste type and preferred size. Confirm delivery, collection, the hire period, VAT and any permit costs before booking.

How long can I keep the skip?

Agree the hire period and collection process when booking. If you need more time, call before the agreed collection or any road permit expiry; extensions are subject to arrangement.

Can I fill it above the sides?

No. Keep everything at or below the marked fill line and within the agreed load. If the pile is larger than expected, call to discuss the next step rather than overfilling.

Will a small skip fit through a small gate?

Do not judge access using only the skip’s size. The delivery vehicle needs room to approach and place it safely. Give us the gate width and any height, turning or surface restrictions.

Make space without the guesswork.

Tell us your postcode, what needs to go and where the skip could sit. Call for a price and available options.
